What have we been doing with Toby?

Over the last few weeks Toby and the class have been working on some really cool Science and ICT ideas. We started out by looking at how to use a digital camera - making sure we kept it safe - and then we took some photos. After we did this, we reflected upon the photos we took and tried to work out what made some of them interesting and some of them not so interesting.

In Science, we have been looking at how scientists complete experiments. We have been making predictions and then testing these ideas out. We used ice and explored the ideas of changing states from solid to liquid to gas.

The Duathlon

Today we had the pleasure of watching Bailey compete in the duathlon. He was a very eagar beaver and had been asking to compete in it for weeks. I was a little dubious, as he is only now just discovering his sporty side, lol so he still has a long way to go. After some talking we decided that it was good for his risk taking and encouraged him. We did 2 practices in the weekend running up to event, Bailey thought it was sooo fun to try. He even wanted his bike tyres fixed so that he was all ok to go. Today he was very excited, an eagar wee man very keen to go to school. The whole family went down to watch him after lunch for the duathlon. Finally it was his race, and he took off racing as fast as his leg would take him, he is not a strong runner but we were proud. He got tangled in the bikes as there were so many there but he was still smiling as he biked pass that is until he crashed off not far away from me. With some encouragement from the older boys from the sports council and some cuddles from dad, Bailey managed to get back on his bike and finish his lap. I really felt for him and it is true what they say that when you have kids it is like having a piece of your heart walking around outside your body, I would have done it for him if I could. I was extremely proud of him. Miss Smith walked 3/4 of the last lap with him, when the older boys again rallied around and then got him run/limping down the last straight. I was really amazed by the lovely supportive spirit behind everyone as they cheered him on. He was absolutely delighted to get over the finish line. What a wonderful achievement, what story to tell all the grandparents on the phone tonight. He is already talking about his next race even if he still can hardly walk on his ankle.

Olympians of the future

Today we had our Junior Duathlon. Team 5 were amazing, nearly half the class entered the event and we all had a fantastic time. I think that I was more excited than the children. I was so proud of them all, and the smiles on their faces told the whole story. Everyone to took part finished the race, which was an amazing achievement in itself, since they had to run twice around the track and cycled twice too. Overall we had a fantastic afternoon and came away with 3 ribbons. Millie White broke the school record for the Year 1 girls and Claudia Alloway came a fantastic 3rd. We also had a ribbon in the Year 1 Boys group with Corin coming 3rd, amazing effort everyone. For the first time that these children have entered the Dualthon, I was impressed with how much talent Team 5 showed..... I think that we have some budding athletes in this class. A great achievement had by all.

Our new Smart Zone.

We are lucky to have a new amazing smart zone in the junior team. This is where we can practice our smarts, have a go at something new or do something that we enjoy. Here are some of our class doing what we do best......Sparkling at our Smarts.

Sparkle – smart time
Bailey - I did woodwork, I made a space rocket and a video camera. On my rocket I had a long bit for the boosters and I made some fire and the space rocket roof.

Mac- I made a space rocket, and it was a war one, and it can crash into things and it won’t break and nothing can distroy it. I made it out of some stiky tape and boxes, a flat thing and two containers, some string and I have got some spongey stuff.

Eric – I play trains, I was a good team player as I played with other people.

William J/Oscar – we cleaned the tub and played with the water. We were making a mixture to dip the cloths in, so we can clean. We want to be proud of the school.

William R – I played in the shop, we were playing a game and getting some things and food. Some people didn’t pay properly, we got them back and made them pay properly. Me and Annabelle were good team players and asked them pay properly.

Georgette – we played in the playhouse, we played mums and dad. We decided on who would be who. We did some cooking

Millie S – I played at the shop, I brought food at the shop and used the money. I counted out the money.

Bella – I was playing in the play area with the dolls, I was a mum.

Annabelle – We played put the food back where people could see how much dollars they were.

Corin – I really like how the saws and things are not hard to saw on the wood. We would like some sand paper to help smooth the edges.

How do we know if we have been successful?
We don’t rush it, putting the correct things on our construction and thinking about what we need to add. It looks really good so we know we are working really hard.
